Topics covered:
"Our Youth:
A Bright Future or a Lost Generation"
Youth is about renewal,
fresh ideas challenging old traditions and yearning for the untried. Youth find
change inebriating, not intimidating. Youth is also impetuous, unpredictable:
with the promise of a better future comes a veiled threat to tear down the
past. ... Youth breaks all the rules. Youth is colorful, irreverent,
entertaining, sometimes shocking, almost always rebellious. Youth is on the
vanguard of fashion, music, literature and popular culture. Youth is, in a
word, energy waiting to be harnessed. Youth can also be seen as carriers of a
new worldview, a new ideology.
These and other views
concerning youth are examined closely: how youth see the future and their
future roles. Conforming to the Society's
mission and ensuring a bright future for Islam in America, MAS considers Islamic work
among all segments of Muslim youth a top priority. Youth work proved and
continues to prove to be one of the most challenging yet effective areas of
Islamic work. MAS believes that Self Development (Tarbiya) is a core process to
build the Muslim society and this process must take place in the youth age, a
very critical period of life. Youth are the ones who are going to lead the
Muslim community in the future and MAS believes that it is its duty to prepare
them for that critical and important role.
"Love America, Live Islam"
This session will discuss important Islamic concepts that parents should instill in their children to make sure they know the purpose of their existence, they are proud of their identity as Muslims, and in the same time they are contributing positively to their North American society. Emphasis will be placed on important qualities that parents should try to help their children to have to ensure they grow up as confident and proud Muslims. The lecturer will use the example of Yusuf PBUH and how he dealt with the society while preserving his identity.
"Hand in hand, we build our society"
Speakers will compare and contrast between being an American and being a
Muslim. Are these contradictory or complementary Identities? They will also
compare Muslims between assimilation and isolation and also discuss the
possibility of Integration with preserving the Islamic identity. What are the
rights and responsibilities of being a righteous American Muslim citizen? They
will introduce the concept of civic engagement in American institutions under
the Islamic command of "Forbidding the Evil and Enjoining the Good". They will
provide practical ideas and practices that will help you get civically engaged
with your representative institutions in your local communities. They will also
show the great effect of Muslims contributions in these institutions, national
and local, on improving the overall distorted image of Islam and Muslims in the
US.
"Step Up To The Plate in 2008"
This session will discuss the upcoming election and the American Muslim Agenda as Faithful Citizenship. It is A Call to Political and Civic Responsibility.
"Brightening Our Future: Our Youth, Our Families & Our Community"
Speakers will elaborate on the right
methodology to become active and community engaged; inspired by the prophet's
own activism. What is the meaning of Revival and Reform, its importance, and
its relevance on the American scene? What is the role of the American Muslim
locally and nationally? How do we implement this role? Muslim Americans are in
dire need for an inclusive, collective movement of Revival and Reform based on
integration and collaboration with a spirit of respect and appreciation. By
citing examples from the practices of the prophets and their follower
reformists; by studying the roots of forgotten Islamic values essential to any
revival and reform efforts, we can build a model Muslim community.
